Pizza Hut launches 1st outlet in Tibet

Pizza Hut, the US fast-food chain, has forayed into Tibet for the first time by launching a restaurant on a downtown Lhasa street, which is popular among Buddhists and tourists.

Tibet's first Pizza Hut has been opened on Barkhor Street. The outlet neighbors a KFC restaurant, which also launched on the street on the same day. Both Pizza Hut and KFC are operated by Yum China on the Chinese mainland.

The newly opened outlet features Tibetan-style lamps and pillars, and waitresses dressed in traditional costumes greet the customers at its red Tibetan gate.

A spokesperson with the restaurant said, "We chose the iconic Barkhor Street, which is frequented by Lhasa citizens and tourists and where we can meet the demands of different groups."

In recent years, Tibet has increased its appeal to international brands with fast-improving transportation and telecommunication infrastructure.

KFC had opened the first branch in Tibet in 2016, becoming the first big Western fast-food chain to enter the region.
