Rajit Punhani, a 1991-batch IAS officer of Bihar cadre, took charge as Chief Executive Officer, FSSAI on 1st September 2025. He brings extensive experience in governance, public policy, and institutional leadership.
Punhani brings more than 30 years of experience across governance, public policy, finance, taxation, social security, health, energy and institutional leadership. He previously served as Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, where he spearheaded efforts to align the skilling ecosystem with industry and global benchmarks. Earlier, he was Secretary at Rajya Sabha, and CEO, Sansad TV.
An Economics graduate from St. Stephen’s College and an MBA in Finance from IIM Bangalore, Punhani’s appointment comes as FSSAI works to finalise new food labelling norms. This leadership change comes as the Supreme Court has asked the central government to roll out new food labelling rules, requiring packaged foods to clearly show details like sugar, salt, and saturated fat content.
FSSAI has granted an extension to submit the expert committee report until October.
