The catering wing of Indian Railways, IRCTC (The Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation)has installed instant pizza vending machine at the Mumbai Central railway station. The automatic vending machine prepares fresh pizzas within five minutes, that too at a reasonable price.

“As a part of catering modernisation step, IRCTC has installed an automatic Pizza Vending Machine at Mumbai Central Railway Station. This machine will dish out hot pizzas in “mechanised” way for commuters visiting the station,” tweeted IRCTC.

This makes Mumbai Central railway station the first-ever to get an instant pizza vending machine in India. The automatic vending machine has been sourced from Yess Pizza, which is also the first restaurant in India to serve instant pizzas out of a vending machine.

The commuters need to insert the money first and then select from the various choices of pizza. Once the order is made, the machine kneads fresh dough and makes a thin crust base. Once the sauce and toppings are added, the pizza, then, is baked inside the machine oven. All these takes just five minutes.

Besides, the consumers can place the order for French fries and ice cream in future too.

Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman denies Pizza being taxed lower than peanut brittle under GST

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Nirmala Sitharaman has denied that peanut brittle was taxed more under Goods and Services Tax (GST) than pizza, and said such rumours were being spread by the social media.

While addressing a meeting to give clarifications on GST in Tamil Nadu, she said, "Only 5% GST was imposed on peanut brittle, whereas 18 per cent GST was levied on pizza served at restaurants and 5% on pizza breads that can be used in homes or eateries."

On a request to exempt Idly batter and match boxes from GST, she said that the same would be placed before the GST council for consideration.

She said, "GST was not aimed at increasing the revenue but monitoring the 85 per cent informal economy of the country which was functioning without any bank transaction."

Stating that BJP had earlier opposed GST as it did not have the compensation component for manufacturing states like Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, she said, "Now we have introduced compensation for the manufacturing states."

She added, "Both the Central and State governments will now get equal revenue from GST."

The minister said, "GST rates were fixed in consultation with all the state governments after various rounds of meeting of GST councils with the participation of finance ministers of 29 states, seven union territories and Union Finance Minister."

She added, "I believe Tamil Nadu representatives would have discussed the business concerns of the state in the council."

Sitharaman also urged the small and medium businessmen to registrar under GST.

Uno Pizzeria & Grill plans to set up 70 outlets in the next seven years

Fans of deep-dish pizza restaurant chain Uno Pizzeria & Grill will soon be able to indulge themselves right. The Boston-headquartered fast-food chain that specialises in the Chicago-style pizza has tied up with the Kolkata-based Dhanukas of the Dhunseri Group to enter the Indian market.

The franchise agreement envisages about 70 outlets being set up in the next seven years, with the first of these in the Delhi NCR region in October-December, followed by Kolkata. The Indian partner will invest Rs 30 crore in the first two years.

Group unit Dhunseri Petrochem’s wholly owned subsidiary Tastetaria will develop and operate the Uno brand by opening outlets through the master franchisee affiliate as well as the sub-franchisee route.

Frederick Houston, Vice President, Franchise Operations, Uno Pizzeria & Grill, said, "India is a market with huge potential for pizza and pasta lovers. We will now have the chance to offer the Uno brand proposition to consumers with our own local twist to the menu. Our menu will offer only 60-70 dishes against 140 dishes being offered in the US restaurants. In India, our pizza and pasta offerings will be followed by more options on burgers and appetisers."

Dhunseri plans to follow the asset-light model and lease space. Each outlet will be of 2,500-3,000 square feet with the interiors replicating the look and feel of an Uno Pizzeria & Grill restaurant but customised to create a unique dining experience, said Tastetaria chairman Mrigank Dhanuka.

The Dhanuka scion said, "We plan to launch not just the full-service store format, but also bring other facets of the Uno portfolio, including kiosks."

The target is revenue of Rs 6 crore per restaurant per year.

Pizza Hut in Israel, accused of mocking hunger striking prisoners

Palestinians called for a boycott of Pizza Hut on Tuesday after the company's franchise in Israel was accused of mocking hunger-striking prisoners.

The franchise's Facebook page was said to have shared an image released by Israeli police which appears to show Palestinian hunger-strike leader Marwan Barghouti secretly breaking his fast.

"Barghouti, if you are going to break your (hunger) strike, isn't pizza the better choice?" a screenshot of the post said, with a pizza box seemingly photoshopped into the picture.

The image was later removed from the Facebook page, though it was still found on the page of at least one local branch.

A spokeswoman for Pizza Hut International said, "It was completely inappropriate and does not reflect the values of our brand."

She added, "The local franchisee in the country removed it. We truly regret any hurt this may have caused."

Hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails are currently on hunger strike over their conditions.

The post sparked fury on Palestinian social media, including calls to boycott the chain.

Alaa Abu Diab, wrote on Facebook, "Pizza Hut is ridiculing the prisoners' strike," and used the hashtag #boycott_pizzahut.

The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which calls for boycotting Israel until it ends the occupation of Palestinian territories, said it supported calls to snub Pizza Hut.

Pizza.com of Pakistan uses a robot 'waitress' for serving in restaurant

A fast food restaurant in Pakistan has become the first eatery in the country to use a robot 'waitress' for serving the diners.

Pizza.com, located in the city of Multan in the Punjab province, is seeing unusual rush of customers after the local media reported about the robot serving food.

The robot has reportedly been developed by pizzeria owner's son, an electrical engineering graduate from National University of Science and Technology in Islamabad.

Syed Aziz Ahmed Jafari, the owner, said, "Soon after the news of the robotic waitress spread, there is a long queue of customers outside the shop who want to dine here."

He said his son, Syed Osama Aziz, gave the unique idea of making a robotic waitress to give a boost to the business.

Jafari added, "My son was interested in going to the United States for further studies, but I asked him to do something for our country, particularly this city (Multan). I am also feeling proud as a Multani; we have left Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad behind."

He said the people were coming to his pizzeria not only from Multan but even from the adjoining districts.

While Jafari was interested in introducing four more robotic waitresses, he said he would not reduce the number of human waiters as he did not want to make anybody jobless. He also urged the government to come forward and help his son in improving this technology.

The robot is able to navigate to the customer's table, greet the customer, serve the meal and come back to the counter, said Aziz, the developer.

"Much is needed to improve it. I took the basic idea from China where robots are working and serving in restaurants already," he said.
