Ye Catarina, inspired by a popular Goan song by Henry D’Souza and Helen D’Cruz, has made its debut in the Panjim culinary scene. Nestled in the Latin Quarter of Fontainhas, the restaurant offers a unique blend of vintage charm and contemporary sophistication, reimagining Goa’s rich cuisine, tavern culture, and music traditions.
Building on the legacy of Ritz Classic, which introduced the first fish thali in Goa, Ye Catarina emphasizes fresh, seasonal seafood while presenting a modern interpretation of traditional flavors. The menu showcases an innovative approach, featuring dishes such as Fiery Fish Taco on Bajra Tortilla, Ghee Poached Reef Cod with Mussel Curry and Rice, Kingfish Crudo, and Grouper Carpaccio. The dessert options include Gluten-Free Fig Frangipane and Chocolate Delice, offering a refined take on sweet indulgences.
The restaurant’s bar menu, curated by Countertop, highlights Goa’s signature spirit, feni, along with creative twists on classic cocktails. The offerings, named after iconic Konkani songs, include the Fotkiro Mog, blending brandy, whiskey, and Rosso Vermouth with grapefruit, and Maka Darya Dislo Na, combining pink guava and coconut water for a beach-inspired experience. Another standout, Maria Pitache, incorporates cafreal for a Goan take on a spicy cocktail.
Shanavi Dessai, a member of the Ritz Classic family, conceptualized Ye Catarina after returning to Goa from Washington, D.C. “Ye Catarina is more than just a restaurant… It’s an experience. We’ve meticulously curated every detail, from the vintage decor to the soulful music, to transport you to a bygone era of elegance and charm,” Dessai shared.
The two-level establishment blends Goan-Portuguese architectural elements with warm, rustic decor. The ground floor features a bar, a lounge, and a dedicated space for live performances, while the upper floor offers a spacious dining area with views of the performances via a projector. The interiors, inspired by azulejo blues and enhanced with handpicked artifacts, create an atmosphere steeped in nostalgia.
Ye Catarina aims to enhance Panjim’s live music scene with performances featuring Portuguese-origin fado, Konkani classics, and jazz. By hosting these events, the restaurant seeks to provide both locals and travelers with a cultural experience rooted in Goa’s musical heritage.
This new addition to Panjim’s dining scene offers a thoughtfully crafted experience, celebrating the convergence of Goa’s past and present in a setting that pays homage to its cultural richness.
