Restaurant India News: Penguin Overseas Enters India’s Soju Market with ‘So Good’ Range

Penguin Overseas, an importer and distributor of premium spirits, has introduced ‘So Good’ Soju in India, marking its move into the developing low-ABV beverage segment. The product is produced domestically and positions itself among the initial entrants in India’s locally manufactured Soju category.

The brand is designed to offer a lighter drinking option, featuring a clean and balanced profile along with natural flavouring. Its entry reflects a broader shift in consumption patterns, where consumers are increasingly exploring beverages with lower alcohol content and easier drinkability.

Globally, Soju remains the highest-selling spirit by volume, supported by South Korea’s established drinking culture and the international reach of Korean pop culture, including music, television, and food. In India, this exposure is gradually influencing consumer preferences, particularly among younger demographics in urban markets.

The launch also builds on Penguin Overseas’ experience with the category. The company first brought Soju into India over 15 years ago through imports and has since developed familiarity with market behaviour and consumption trends. The introduction of a locally produced variant signals a shift towards adapting global categories for Indian consumers, especially in terms of taste and usage occasions.

Jaspreet Singh, Founder and CEO, Penguin Overseas, said, “Our goal with So Good is to challenge conventional taste profiles and offer Indian consumers a world-class drinking experience. With the rising appreciation for craft and local innovation, we believe this product will resonate with Soju connoisseurs and new-age consumers alike".

The current portfolio includes both still and sparkling variants. The still range is available in Peach and Green Apple flavours, while the sparkling category includes Yuzu Lime and K-Bomb. The company has indicated plans to introduce additional flavours such as Green Grape, Strawberry, Blueberry, and Lemon.

At present, the product is distributed across Maharashtra, including Mumbai and Pune, and Haryana, covering Gurgaon, Panipat, Faridabad, Karnal, Panchkula, and Sonipat. The company plans a phased expansion into other regions, including Delhi, Karnataka, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Tamil Nadu.

The entry of a locally produced Soju brand adds to the diversification of beverage menus across bars, casual dining spaces, and premium restaurants. With increasing demand for low-ABV options and experimental formats, operators may view such products as an opportunity to attract younger consumers and expand drink portfolios without significantly altering pricing structures or service formats.
