InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort, part of IHG Hotels & Resorts’ luxury and lifestyle portfolio, has completed the final phase of its large-scale transformation project, expanding its hospitality, wellness, dining, and events infrastructure on the Coromandel Coast.
The redevelopment reflects the growing focus among luxury hospitality operators on destination-led resorts that combine leisure, wellness, business travel, and large-format celebrations within a single integrated property.
Spread across 15 acres along the East Coast Road, the reimagined beachfront resort now features upgraded guestrooms and suites, new dining venues, an ocean-facing ballroom, beach lawns, wellness facilities, sports infrastructure, and immersive guest experiences.
The property offers 110 guestrooms and suites with views of landscaped gardens, pools, and the Bay of Bengal. Premium accommodation categories include the Grand Presidential Suite with a jacuzzi and steam room, the Presidential Suite with a private pool and spa room, and the Rathi Suite equipped with a plunge pool and steam room.
“The reopening of InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort marks an important milestone for our luxury portfolio in India. This multi-million-dollar transformation reflects our commitment to delivering destination-led, experience-rich stays that combine world-class hospitality with a strong sense of place. We are excited to welcome guests back to a reimagined resort that sets a new benchmark for mindful luxury on the Coromandel Coast,” said Sudeep Jain, Managing Director, South West Asia, IHG Hotels & Resorts.
Hospitality analysts note that luxury hotel brands are increasingly investing in experiential travel formats as demand rises for integrated resorts offering curated wellness, events, dining, and cultural experiences.
The redevelopment also strengthens the property’s positioning in India’s growing destination wedding and MICE tourism markets. The resort now offers over one lakh square feet of indoor and outdoor event space, including the 12,000 sq. ft. sea-facing Vaibhava Ballroom and the 70,000 sq. ft. Vaibhava & Beach Lawns. Together, the event spaces can accommodate more than 5,000 guests.
The dining portfolio has also been expanded with multiple restaurant and bar concepts, including Melting Pot, KoKoMMo Tiki Shack, Tao of Peng, Viora Sky Lounge, and The Gatsby Lounge. Industry observers say luxury resorts are increasingly diversifying food and beverage offerings to increase non-room revenue and enhance destination appeal.
The property has also added wellness-focused infrastructure such as Amrtam Spa, meditation gardens, walking trails, yoga spaces, sports facilities, pickleball courts, ATV trails, and dedicated family recreation zones. These additions reflect growing consumer demand for wellness-integrated hospitality experiences.
Reflecting on the transformation, Anand Nair, General Manager, InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort, commented, “This relaunch marks a proud milestone for us, unveiling a truly transformed resort. Envisioned as a coastal icon reimagined, it brings together the richness of South Indian culture with modern luxury. Every space tells a story and each experience is thoughtfully curated to offer guests a more personal and elevated stay. Our ambition is to position the resort not merely as a place to stay, but as a destination in its own right.”
Located approximately 60 minutes from Chennai International Airport and near the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mahabalipuram, the resort forms part of InterContinental’s global portfolio of more than 240 hotels and resorts. IHG also continues to expand its luxury footprint in South Asia with upcoming projects including InterContinental Pokhara Resort in Nepal and InterContinental Colombo in Sri Lanka.
