Restaurant India News: BYD and KFC China Launch 9-Minute EV Charging Drive-Thrus

BYD has partnered with Yum China Holdings to introduce “nine-minute” charging drive-thrus across China. The initiative integrates quick-service dining with ultra-fast EV charging, positioning food outlets as functional stopovers within the evolving mobility ecosystem.

According to a statement shared on its official WeChat account, BYD said the model will enable electric vehicle users to charge their cars while collecting meals from KFC China outlets, with the entire process designed to be completed in under 10 minutes. The concept is structured around reducing idle time for consumers, while increasing throughput for both charging infrastructure and quick-service restaurants.

The “nine-minute” format is built on BYD’s second-generation Blade battery, introduced in March, which the company claims can reach up to 97 percent charge in just nine minutes. This aligns service time with charging cycles, allowing food brands to capture demand during what was previously non-productive wait time.

BYD has also rolled out an in-car smart ordering system. This feature allows drivers to place orders directly via the vehicle interface and identify nearby KFC drive-thru charging locations along their route. The functionality will initially be available in BYD’s Fangchengbao Ti7 SUV and will later be extended across its broader passenger EV portfolio.

The partnership is aimed at addressing one of the key friction points in EV adoption—charging duration—by integrating it with routine consumption behaviour. This signals a shift towards embedding food service within transit infrastructure, creating new revenue channels linked to mobility patterns.

BYD has been scaling its charging network aggressively, announcing the completion of its 5,000th flash charging station in China on March 31. The company plans to expand this footprint to 20,000 stations by the end of the year, indicating a rapid build-out of physical infrastructure that could support similar partnerships with food and retail operators.

The move comes amid a slowdown in BYD’s growth trajectory. The company reported an approximate 30 percent decline in first-quarter sales compared to the previous year, reflecting broader weakness in China’s EV market, concerns around oversupply, and reduced government subsidies from 2026. Competitive pressure from brands such as Leapmotor and Geely’s Zeekr has also intensified.

Despite these challenges, BYD continues to lead the domestic EV market, with 367,828 units sold in the first quarter, according to CNBC calculations. However, its Hong Kong-listed shares have declined by around 20 percent year-on-year, and the company has reported its first annual profit drop since 2021.

The partnership also underscores the scale and resilience of China’s quick-service restaurant segment. A 2025 report by DaXue Consulting indicates that KFC remains the largest fast-food chain in the country. As of December 2025, Yum China operated nearly 13,000 KFC outlets across 2,500 cities, compared to around 7,500 McDonald’s stores in mainland China, as per Xinhua data.

“Fast food is firmly part of everyday life in China, especially in cities,” said Ashley Dudarenok, founder of digital consultancy ChoZan. She attributed this trend to long working hours, dense urban lifestyles, and the rapid growth of delivery platforms.

Yum China reported a 5 percent year-on-year increase in KFC China’s sales in 2025, with operating profit rising by 8 percent. The country’s fast-food market was valued at $176.3 billion, according to IBISWorld, with continued expansion expected, particularly in lower-tier cities.

The integration of EV infrastructure with food service reflects a broader shift in how hospitality formats are evolving. As charging stations become high-frequency touchpoints, quick-service brands are positioning themselves within these networks to capture incremental demand and remain relevant in a mobility-driven consumption environment.
