Diageo India has revamped McDowell’s No 1 with an upgraded whisky blend, redesigned bottle and a repositioned brand identity as it looks to strengthen the product’s position in the mass-premium whisky segment.
The brand sells over 30 million cases annually, making the relaunch a significant portfolio move for Diageo India. The company said the changes extend beyond packaging, with the revamped offering retaining its established Scotch cues while placing greater emphasis on quality, craftsmanship and the drinking experience.
The upgraded blend combines select imported Scotch, Indian malts and premium grain spirits. The whisky is matured in select oak and American barrels and blended across India and Scotland. According to Diageo, the new liquid has undergone more than 100 quality checks as part of the development process.
The company describes the whisky as carrying vanilla, grain sweetness and mellow malt aromas, with matured wood and sweet spice notes. The palate combines gentle sweetness with malty, woody and vanilla flavours, followed by a clean finish with hints of vanilla cream.
The relaunch comes as Diageo looks to respond to changing expectations in the mass-premium whisky category. The company said consumers are increasingly evaluating products on factors beyond price, including quality, craftsmanship and the overall drinking experience.
Diageo said its consumer insights were based on research involving more than 10,000 consumers across 11 markets. The findings were used to develop the revamped McDowell’s No 1 while retaining elements of the brand that consumers are familiar with.
Ruchira Jaitly, Chief Marketing Officer, Diageo India, said consumer perceptions of value were changing, with quality, craftsmanship and experience becoming increasingly important alongside affordability.
For the Indian spirits market, the relaunch places McDowell’s No 1 within Diageo’s strategy for the mass-premium segment, where the company is seeking to balance accessibility with an upgraded product proposition. The revamped whisky retains the brand’s broad-market positioning while introducing changes to its liquid, packaging and overall brand identity.
