Coca-Cola's nutrition drinks to appear on chemist shops soon

Beverage company Coca-Cola ready to come up with its nutrition products such as electrolyte hydration drinks that will be sold over-the-counter at pharmacies.

“So far we have been very active in the refreshment space; we now want to be a serious player in nutrition,” said company president T Krishnakumar.

The category will be a first for Coca-Cola and such products are expected to be available in medical stores within two months, he said.

The maker of cola drinks which also sells juice and water brands said the company may have a separate distribution model for the new product line.

“We are getting into serious play. We decided we need to have serious products as well to take the company’s journey forward,” Krishnakumar said.

Coca-Cola, which has now had three-quarters of growth, will scale up “to keep relevance in India,” he said.

Separately, the company announced the launch of Aquarius Glucocharge, a ready-to-drink glucose beverage with fruit juice, on Thursday. It said another brand Minute Maid Vitingo — will be scaled up to address micronutrient deficiency and malnutrition.

On consumption prospects, Krishnakumar said, “We see tailwinds of growth and the outlook is positive.”

PepsiCo India on Wednesday said it will reduce salt content in 75 per cent of its snacks portfolio by 2025 as part of strategy towards offering healthier food.

The company also said that as part of sustainable packaging solutions it will pilot 100 per cent compostable, plant-based packaging for its popular snacks products -- Lay's and Kurkure in India from this year.

"We have reduced 5 per cent to 25 per cent sodium across popular variants of our snacks flagship brands, Lay's and Kurkure and we further aim at reducing sodium in 75 per cent of our food's portfolio by 2025," PepsiCo India Vice President - Snacks Category Jagrut Kotecha said in a statement.

PepsiCo India said it has already introduced upgraded variants of its Lay's snacks with reduced sodium in different flavours containing 13 per cent to 215 per cent lesser sodium.

The company's snacks portfolio also include Lehar, Cheetos and Uncle Chipps.

Kotecha further said in line with the PepsiCo's 'performance with purpose goals 2025', the company is working to reduce the impact of its packaging on environment and increase recycling of plastic waste.

"The first step towards the actualisation of this journey is the resizing of packaging of our brands Lay's and Kurkure. This will significantly help us in reducing our carbon footprint," he added.

The company also said it is working with partners to support and leverage new technologies for sustainable packaging solutions.

"We will be piloting the first ever 100 per cent compostable, plant-based packaging for our popular snacks products - Lay's and Kurkure this year," the company said.

India will be among the first countries to pilot this packaging.

"We plan to launch the pilot for this new compostable packaging with Lay's and Kurkure starting in Q4 of this year," it added.

Singapore-based CCube Angels Network has invested Rs 3.5 crore (around $515,000) in health- and nutri-foods maker Inner Being Wellness Pvt. Ltd, which markets its products under the brand ‘Inner Being’.

In a statement, the Hyderabad-headquartered firm said that it plans to use the fresh capital for product development and expansion in tier-1 cities in India and a few other countries.

Launched in 2012 by Pavan Raj Kanungo and headed by CS Jadhav, Inner Being offers items in the wellness, nutricare, and nutrifood categories. It also owns and operates an online store.

“Inner Being is introducing traditional foods like millets, quinoa and other ancient grains in more contemporary formats that appeal to the modern generation such as breakfast mixes, snack mixes, savory snacks, crackers, cookies and energy bars,” said Jadhav.

The company currently offers several millet-based products such as jowar idli, jowar upma, ragi malt, jowar flakes, millet cookies in Hyderabad and is now in the process of expanding to Delhi and Mumbai this year. It plans to spread to 10 cities in couple of years.

Inner Being is also preparing to launch a range of new mixes such as quinoa porridge, millet & nut cake, gluten-free pizza, and millet pancake which will cater to health-conscious consumers.

Inner Being had last year secured funding from Springforth Investment Managers (SIM), a startup accelerator launched by mid-market focused investment banking firm Springforth Capital Advisors Pvt. Ltd.

“We have a strong belief that nutricereals will be the next smart food and specially millet, being a dry land crop, will improve livelihoods at the rural level and at the same time offer nutritious products to the urban consumers,” said Atim Kabra, director of Frontline Strategy, which manages CCube Angels Network.

CCube Angels Network has been structured as a pledge fund. It had earlier backed companies such as Hyperdata.IO, Simbus Technologies, Omnipresent Retail India Pvt. Ltd, Kloneworld, and Cashe.

DuPont Nutrition and Health, the US based chemical company has entered India to cater to the food industry in the country.

The group has opened the centre in Gurgaon to serve food industry in India, DuPont said in a statement.

DuPont Nutrition & Health President Matthias Heinzel said that while the science of food is global, the taste and flavors of food are local.

"As we develop those local solutions, we need to be able to work closely with our local customers on foods they are developing for their consumers," he added.

The centre, which has capabilities to expand, will initially employ 15 to 20 people by 2015-end.

"Among the focus areas of the Innovation Application Center will be protective cultures for dahi and yogurt, soy protein products, ice-cream and more nutritious, Indian snacks and biscuits tailored to meet the regional taste and texture expectations," said, Brian Jones, Regional Leader, South Asia, DuPont Nutrition & Health.

The centre will also allow DuPont to introduce formulations that are more convenient and affordable for more food choices for the food industry, Jones added.
