9 Facts You Should Know About Beer

Best 5 Strong Beer Brands in India to Replace Your Regular Mimosas

1. The Chalkboard Revival: Rustic Meets Real-Time

The Chalkboard Revival: Rustic Meets Real-Time

Chalkboards are back, and they look better than ever. Many breweries use large chalkboards for their beer lists. They bring a rustic, personal touch. It feels warm and inviting, just like the taproom. One major benefit is flexibility. You can change the beers every day. Just wipe and rewrite. For breweries that rotate taps often, this is perfect. You can also add colors, icons, or drawings to show beer styles or alcohol levels. This kind of menu works great for small and medium-sized taprooms. It also helps if your brewery has an earthy or industrial decor theme. The hand-drawn look adds character. If you’re running a brewery that wants a local, cozy feel, chalkboards are the way to go.

2. QR Menus with Augmented Reality (AR) Features

QR Menus with Augmented Reality (AR) Features

Many breweries are turning to digital menus. QR codes are quick, simple, and eco-friendly. But now in 2025, they're getting even better. With AR, you can show more than just names and prices. When customers scan the QR code, they can see beer visuals, tasting notes, origin stories, and even food pairings. Some breweries let customers watch short AR videos of the brewing process. Others show how the beer is poured or what food goes well with it. This works well for modern breweries, especially in cities. It makes your brand look advanced and exciting. It also cuts down on printing costs. If your target audience is young, tech-savvy, and enjoys interactive experiences, AR QR menus are a great choice.

3. Flight-Forward Design: Highlighting Beer Tastings

Flight-Forward Design: Highlighting Beer Tastings

Beer flights are very popular today. Many new beer lovers want to try different styles before picking their favorite. That’s why flight-friendly menus are gaining attention. These menus highlight beer flights or tasting trays. They often show color codes for beer types—like pale for lagers and amber for IPAs. You can also add quick icons for bitterness, alcohol strength, and flavor notes.

This kind of menu encourages customers to explore. It can also help your team upsell and increase sales. Some breweries even offer a “build your own flight” option. This gives customers more control and adds fun to the visit. Flight-forward menus are ideal if your brewery focuses on variety and customer engagement.

4. Infographic-Style Menus for Beer Geeks

Infographic-Style Menus for Beer Geeks

Some customers love to know every detail. They want to understand what hops you used, the origin of your yeast, and the exact IBU level. For these craft beer fans, infographic-style menus work best. These menus look like charts or diagrams. They present beer data in a simple, easy-to-read way. You can add details like:

  • IBU (bitterness)
  • SRM (color)
  • ABV (alcohol level)
  • Origin or region of the style
  • Short tasting notes
  • Best food pairing

Some breweries also show a map of hop sources or a flavor wheel. These visuals are great conversation starters. If your brewery attracts craft beer lovers and home brewers, this menu format will make them feel at home.

5. Eco-Friendly Menus with Sustainable Stories

Eco-Friendly Menus with Sustainable Stories

Today, many consumers care about the planet. They choose products and places that follow green practices. You can show your values through your menu design too. Try printing menus on recycled paper. Use wooden menu boards or switch to digital screens. Add a section that talks about your sustainable efforts. Mention if your ingredients are locally sourced or if you reuse water during brewing.

This kind of branding builds trust. It shows that your business stands for more than profits. Eco-friendly menus are not just good for the Earth. They also attract loyal, responsible customers. If your brand identity includes sustainability, reflect that clearly on your menu.

6. Brand-First Menus: Design That Speaks Your Story

Brand-First Menus: Design That Speaks Your Story

Your brewery is unique. Maybe it has a rock-and-roll theme, or it’s inspired by old-school pubs. Your menu should match your personality. A brand-first menu uses custom fonts, house colors, and signature names. For example, instead of just calling a beer “Wheat Ale,” name it something playful like “Golden Haze” with a short backstory. Add quirky quotes, fun facts, or even comic-style art. This menu style builds emotional connection. It helps your brewery stand out. Customers start associating the look and language with your brand. If your brewery has a strong theme or aesthetic, use it fully in your menu design.

Why Menu Design Matters

Customers notice the little things. A clean, clear, and stylish menu shows that you care. It helps first-time visitors understand your offerings. It also increases chances of upselling, especially if you highlight beer flights, combos, or merch.

In short, your menu is not just functional—it’s a selling tool and a branding piece.

Menu Mistakes That Leave a Bitter Aftertaste

Avoid common design problems like

  • Using hard-to-read fonts
  • No tasting notes
  • Cluttered layout
  • Lack of allergy or alcohol content info
  • Too many beer options with no descriptions

Keep it clean, organised, and consistent with your brewery’s vibe.

The Psychology Behind Menu Fonts

Fonts say a lot. Bold, serif fonts feel strong and traditional. Script fonts look fancy but can be hard to read. Sans-serif fonts are clean and modern.

Choose fonts that suit your brand. Use larger fonts for beer names and smaller text for details. Always test readability in low light, since many taprooms have dim lighting.

Don’t Forget the Food: Add Pairings or Dishes

Many breweries serve snacks or full meals. Your beer menu should include food pairings. You can also merge your beer and food menu into one.

Try sections like “Best with Burgers” or “Perfect with Pizza.” It makes decision-making easier for customers and increases overall spend.

Match Menu with Beer Personality

Does your IPA have a bold and bitter taste? Use strong, striking fonts and sharp designs. Is your lager smooth and refreshing? Go for a minimal, clean look. When your beer and menu feel like they belong together, your brand feels complete.

What’s Brewing in 2025 Menu Trends?

This year, some trends are standing out:

  • Interactive menus through AR or apps
  • Minimalist design with focus on visuals
  • Seasonal menu sections
  • Menus that double as posters or coasters
  • Creative storytelling in beer descriptions

Stay updated and flexible. Customer tastes change, and so should your menu.

The Bottom Line!

Your brewery menu is much more than a simple list of drinks. It’s a reflection of your brand’s personality, a guide that helps customers explore your offerings, and a quiet but powerful salesperson. The design, layout, and tone of your menu play a big role in shaping the overall experience. Whether you choose the rustic appeal of a hand-drawn chalkboard or the high-tech edge of AR-enhanced digital menus, the key is alignment with your brewery’s story. A well-crafted menu does more than just inform—it connects, engages, and leaves a lasting impression. It helps customers discover new beers, understand what they’re drinking, and feel more connected to your brand. And most importantly, it gives them a reason to come back, bring their friends, and keep exploring what your brewery has to offer.

How Microbreweries Are Redefining India’s Drinking Culture?
How Microbreweries Are Redefining India’s Drinking Culture?

The rise of microbreweries in India is a reflection of changing consumer preferences towards unique, locally brewed beers over mass-produced options. Cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Pune have become hub for craft beer culture.  Microbreweries offer more than just beer; they provide an experience with local flavors, creative menus, and community spaces. The brewery market is projected to reach Rs 2,500 crores by 2026 with an annual growth rate of 20-25%.

Change in Consumer Shift
Consumer preferences in India are shifting towards more personalized, authentic experiences, driving the growth of microbreweries. Younger consumers are increasingly seeking unique craft beers that offer distinct flavors and imported ingredients, moving away from mass-produced options.

Pointing his views, Prasanna Kumar, Co-Founder, BLR Brewing Co shared, “The shift from mass-produced beer to small-batch, flavour-forward brews reflects a broader change in consumer preferences—particularly among millennials and Gen Z—who seek quality, authenticity, and unique drinking experiences.”

Commenting on this, Teja Chekuri, Founder of Fullstack Ventures & Global Entrepreneur said, “From a history of just 3-4 major beer companies to the emergence of the first microbrewery in 2008 and the issuance of the first licenses, there has been a huge increase in microbreweries over the past decade.”

“Social media, travel, and better awareness around craft beer are all fueling it. It’s not a phase—it’s a shift in how Indians drink and what they expect,” shared Aniket Patil, Head Chef & Founder, Berlin Brew Beer Garden.

The Key Trends

The microbrewery industry in India is growing, driven by trends like unique, craft beers and sustainable practices. Anirudh Khanna, Managing Director, Independence Brewing Company said, “Consumers are also seeking more experiential dining, with breweries offering social spaces and local flavors.”

Kumar said, “Key trends include the rise of experimental flavours using indigenous ingredients (kokum, mango, coffee), a growing “sober curious” movement that’s increasing demand for craft mocktails, and a focus on sustainability in brewing processes.

There is a rising popularity of beer styles such as IPAs, stouts, wheat beers, and fruit-infused ales. “Sustainable brewing practices, locally sourced ingredients, and beer-and-food pairings are also becoming more popular. Events like beer festivals and tap takeovers help educate consumers and foster community engagement,” pointed Chekuri.

Why Bengaluru is a preferred location?
Bengaluru has emerged as the epicentre of microbreweries. With its cosmopolitan crowd, thriving startup culture, and pleasant weather that supports open-air brewing spaces, the city has the highest concentration of microbreweries in India. As per the reports, there are 300 microbreweries approx. in India and Bengaluru alone has over 100 breweries as on 2025.

Focus on local flavours
When brands focus on local flavours, it tells a unique story. “We at BLR Brewing Co. have leveraged this shift by offering thematic spaces, such as building one of the largest indoor waterfalls at one of our largest outlets, which can seat 1,200 guests together. We also feature locally inspired brews and a strong focus on storytelling and community,” pointed Kumar

“We design our breweries like living spaces open to sky feel, community seating, good music, live events, and karaoke. On the beer side, we’re not chasing gimmicks; we’re serving flavour stories that feel Indian. And our food matches that energy, regional, bold, and always designed to pair well with what’s on tap,” added Patil.

The Foreseen Challenges
Licensing is the big one. “Every state play by its own rulebook, and it can be a mess. Then there’s infrastructure—importing equipment, water consistency, getting skilled brewmasters. Not easy,” added Patil.

While, Khanna mentioned, “The challenges like inconsistent licensing regulations, consumer education, and high setup costs remain.

Patil highlighted that good local partners, a solid legal setup, and patience, can be of good help. “Also, don’t compromise on quality just to save a few bucks. And since not everyone knows craft beer yet, you’ve got to educate them: beer tastings, events, brewery tours, all of that makes a difference.”

The Opportunities
Opportunities lie in expanding beyond major cities, tapping into tier 1 and 2 markets, and innovating with regional flavors. As the craft beer scene matures, there’s potential for export and further market diversification.

“On a personal note, I think these hurdles act as "barriers to entry" for those not serious about the business, so there is a silver lining in this policy cloud. Opportunities are growing due to rising disposable incomes, increased tourism, and a changing consumer view that favors quality and flavor over quantity,” added Chekuri.

As India continues to embrace craft culture, the microbrewery industry is poised for exponential growth.

India's Brewery Business: A Thriving Craft Beer Culture Amidst Challenges

Craft beers and independent breweries in India is no longer a nascent industry. India's alcohol beverage market has seen a notable shift, with craft beer carving out a significant niche. Despite various challenges, the craft beer industry, driven by microbreweries and premium product offerings, is experiencing robust growth. “The brewery industry in India is not uniformly experiencing slow growth. Despite challenges, the sector has demonstrated resilience and adaptability despite regulatory obstacles and market fluctuations. Various factors, including shifting consumer preferences, evolving regulatory environments, and the rise of craft breweries, have contributed to a dynamic and multifaceted market landscape. While some segments may need more growth due to saturation or regulatory limitations, others are witnessing substantial expansion opportunities,” Teja Chekuri, Managing Partner at Ironhill India said.

Growth of Craft Beer in India

The craft beer market in India is burgeoning, characterised by an annual growth rate projected to be around 24.41 percent from 2024 to 2032 (IMARC). This growth is fueled by several factors, including an increased interest from the older demographic, who are attracted to the varied and sophisticated flavours offered by craft beers.

Microbreweries play a crucial role in this expansion. These establishments not only provide a wide array of choices but also bring innovation right into the casual dining experience. The introduction of microbreweries has allowed for a personal touch in the brewing process, often located within restaurants and pubs, making craft beer more accessible and experiential for consumers.

Prasanna Kumar, CEO & Co-founder of BLR Brewing Co. cautions that starting a brewery involves more than just arranging finances and handling cash flow. Despite the allure of owning a brewery, which might seem trendy and less demanding than other businesses, plus the added perk of having beer readily available, the reality of entering the beer business in India can be quite different. Kumar emphasises that the actual challenges and learning experiences only become apparent through the process of setting up and running the business.

Consumer Preferences and Market Dynamics

Today's Indian consumer shows a growing preference for low-alcohol and non-alcoholic beers, reflecting a broader trend towards health-conscious choices. However, there is also a significant demand for premium alcoholic beverages, as evidenced by the surge in sales of high-quality, premium-category beers. This segment is expected to dominate the industry, driven by the middle-class's increasing disposable income and desire for innovative and high-quality products.

“The distribution channels for craft beer are also evolving, with both on-trade (bars, pubs) and off-trade (retail stores) venues seeing growth. The on-trade channel, in particular, benefits from the social dynamics of beer consumption, where trying new beers becomes a communal and shared experience,” Delhi-based industry expert Sudhir Upadhyay, in the trade for 25 years commented.

Challenges and Competitive Landscape

While the craft beer sector is growing, it faces competition from other alcoholic beverages and a regulatory environment that can be stringent. Additionally, the market sees a high level of competition among existing players, with major brands continually innovating to capture consumer interest. Recent product launches by companies like Anheuser-Busch InBev, which introduced new varieties tailored to Indian tastes, signify the competitive dynamics in this sector.

“Advancements in brewing techniques, product diversification, and strategic partnerships have injected fresh momentum into the industry. As India's economy develops and consumer purchasing power increases, the brewery industry is well-positioned to capitalise on the rising demand for premium and experiential beverages. Long story short, the brewery industry in India presents a nuanced picture. While challenges are present, it is essential to recognize that the industry is not uniformly experiencing slow growth. It is characterised by a blend of opportunities and obstacles, offering stakeholders a realistic and well-informed perspective,” Chekuri added.

Regional Insights

There are four to five states which have set clear guidelines for the setting up of a microbrewery, with complete excise policies such as Karnataka, Haryana, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Delhi, Pondicherry and a few more.

India's craft beer market displays diverse growth across its regions, driven by unique cultural and consumer dynamics. South India, with cities like Bangalore and Hyderabad, leads in craft beer innovation, supported by a rich culinary culture and urban populace that appreciates diverse, quality beers. North India, particularly Delhi and Gurgaon, shows dynamic market growth with its dense population and evolving tastes encouraging numerous craft breweries. In West and Central India, Mumbai and Pune are propelled by an urban lifestyle and corporate culture, making craft beers popular among young professionals. East India, with cities like Kolkata and Bhubaneswar, is rapidly growing as digital adoption increases and younger demographics seek innovative beers, making these regions crucial to the expansion of India's craft beer culture.

Future Outlook

The future of India's brewery business appears promising. As the consumer base grows and matures, the demand for diverse and high-quality beer is expected to rise. The industry's potential is vast, with room for new entrants and innovation. Additionally, the increasing penetration of online sales platforms and the expansion of distribution networks are expected to further boost the market's growth.

While the Indian brewery business, particularly the craft beer segment, navigates through various challenges, its growth prospects remain strong. The shift towards more nuanced and quality-focused beer offerings continues to shape the landscape of alcoholic beverages in India.

4 craft beer trend that is ruling Indian breweries during the pandemic
4 craft beer trend that is ruling Indian breweries during the pandemic

Beer is a social drink and during this time of social distancing, it has adversely affected the sale of beers forcing the brewers to dispose of the already produced brews that passed its shelf life.

Due to the closure of the hospitality sector, beers were the most affected amongst all the alcohol drinks. Last year was one of the worst years any of us has suffered, and that goes double for microbreweries, brewpubs, bars, restaurants. Despite the difficulties, brewers are doing what they do best — creating and releasing innovative Craft Beers that keep consumers coming back for more.

New ways to sell Beers: We will see a continuation and expansion of several trends which are related to COVID-19 e.g. online sales of beers, home delivery of growlers, maximizing available outdoor space where possible for customers in Taproom, Digital Menus etc. Permission to fill craft beer in growlers and deliver to customers at their homes plays a big role in survival of microbreweries in Maharashtra & Karnataka during the times of pandemic. Obviously, growler delivery has played a huge role in mitigating the effects of taproom closures due to COVID-19. Breweries changed their business model in just a matter of weeks once they got permission to deliver craft beer in growlers, and will need to continue to leverage these new distribution platforms into the New Year. At Drifters we opened a number of small Growlers Stations in different areas of Mumbai & Pune to sell our craft beers in Growlers for Pick-up and Delivery, across both the cities. Many more breweries follow the same model in Maharashtra to increase their sales and as per my view this trend will continue in next year.

Fruit Sour

Fruit Sours and IPAs will lead the way in 2021: While it’s always fun to speculate which new and innovative styles & techniques will define beer in the year ahead, I think 2021’s most important trend is going to be in relation to customer experience and human resources. “Craft beer is all about the people”.

Craft beer trend is picking up very fast in India and with this trend people also want to know and experience their beers differently than before. If we talk about which styles of beer will trend in 2021 then, two types come to my mind, Fruit Sours and Hazy IPAs, Fruit Sours are made with local and exotic fruit infusion with natural sourness generated by lactobacillus bacteria and is creamy enough to balance that sourness. Hazy IPAs are very hoppy, fruity and an unfiltered IPA, they tend to be very low in bitterness with some tropical and juicy flavours. Hazy IPAs also have a fuller & creamier mouth feel.

‘Lagers’ get Respect in Craft Industry: One more trend started last year which is going to be continuing for a long time is the craft industry getting a respect for a Lager. Lager has suffered a lot in the craft beer market due to their impression of being sold in commercial bottles. But now breweries have started experimenting with lagers and people are also reacting to it very well. As everyone is used to drinking lager from a commercial bottle since long, they already have developed a taste for it. Here at Drifters we have three to four different kinds of Lagers always on Tap for our customers to enjoy, such as Helles (German Lager), Vienna Lager, Amber Lager, Pilsner (Czech Pale Lager), IPL (India Pale Lager).

Craft lager

Events go Virtual: This year, we’ve seen large scale functions and events go virtual, and that will also apply to the Craft Beer industry. Many breweries started doing quizzes, live events and show online to attract more customers with an option to deliver growlers to their home so they can join live events whilst sipping and enjoying beers from the comfort of their home, which they used to do in Taproom. I don’t see this trend going anywhere, at least for the entire next year.

Finally I can say, the Craft Beer sector doesn’t necessarily need to be modernized, but craft brewers are changing slowly. The whole craft beer market will become ever more inclusive and innovative with a greater growth expected over the next few years.
