Zomato Launches PackSwitch for Sustainable Food Packaging Solutions

Zomato has introduced PackSwitch, an interactive platform aimed at helping restaurants identify sustainable food packaging based on the type of food they serve and connect with verified suppliers across India.

The platform addresses a practical issue for restaurant operators: different dishes require different packaging specifications. Items such as curries, biryani, burgers, pizzas, desserts and beverages can vary in their requirements for heat retention, moisture control, oil resistance, sealing and spill prevention.

PackSwitch allows restaurants to select a food category, review suitable packaging materials and then explore sourcing options from a network of 100+ verified suppliers across India. Materials listed on the platform include bagasse, aluminium, areca, compostable plastic, earthenware, glass and paper, including kraft and coated variants.

The initiative comes as restaurants face growing consumer demand for reduced plastic use while also needing packaging that can maintain food quality during delivery. The platform's approach focuses on matching packaging material with the operational requirements of individual dishes rather than treating sustainability as a one-material replacement exercise.

Zomato said the initiative builds on its Plastic-Free Future Program, which since December 2024 has recognised more than 10,000 restaurants across 500+ cities for adopting alternatives to plastic packaging for their main menu items. As of March 31, 2026, participating restaurants had collectively delivered more than 100 million ‘low plastic packaging’ orders.

For restaurant operators, the packaging decision also has implications for material consumption, storage, transportation and regulatory preparedness. Selecting packaging suited to the food can help reduce unnecessary components and address issues such as leakage, excess moisture and damaged presentation during delivery.

PackSwitch is therefore positioned as a sourcing and decision-making tool for restaurants evaluating alternatives to conventional plastic packaging, bringing material information and supplier access into a single platform.
