Restaurant India News: Six Senses London Debuts at The Whiteley in Bayswater

The luxury hospitality brand Six Senses has officially opened its first property in the United Kingdom with the launch of Six Senses London, located within The Whiteley London redevelopment in London. The property occupies the site of the former Whiteley’s department store on Queensway in Bayswater and represents the brand’s entry into the UK market as part of the broader luxury and lifestyle portfolio of IHG Hotels & Resorts.

Positioned close to Hyde Park and the Notting Hill neighbourhood, the hotel includes 109 guest rooms and suites along with 14 branded residences. Several accommodations feature private terraces. The property’s design incorporates large windows, glass rain showers, and interior materials such as wood finishes and darker colour palettes. The top accommodation category, the Whiteley Suite, includes a 125-square-metre rooftop terrace and offers the option of a private floor arrangement.

Nick Yarnell, General Manager of Six Senses London, said the project was designed to integrate hospitality with the surrounding neighbourhood and heritage of the site. He said, “We wanted Six Senses London to feel like a hotel that embraces you from the moment you arrive. Warm, genuine, and instinctive, yet delivered with exacting standards and quiet precision. As part of The Whiteley, we honour the heritage of British craft and innovation while creating something that gives back to the neighbourhood and feels deeply connected to its community.”

The property has been developed within the restored Grade II listed façade of the original Whiteley’s building. Interior and spatial design were created by AvroKO in partnership with EPR Architects, retaining elements of the historic structure while introducing modern hospitality spaces. The concept references the influence of the Great Exhibition of 1851, which inspired the original department store founder William Whiteley. The restored grand staircase, previously a defining architectural feature of the store, has been reconstructed and extended through three levels to a glass-domed ceiling.

Adam Farmerie, Partner of AvroKO, said the design approach reinterprets historic influences in a contemporary format. He said, “Six Senses London draws from the visual language of the Great Exhibition era, which often relied on black and white contrast. Rather than replicate that palette, we introduced deep greens into the lobby marble and architectural detailing, reframing the period through a natural lens. Vitrines remain, but plant life now occupies them. Transparency, from the staircase to the glass shower pods in the rooms, allows light to move freely through the building and shifts the emporium from spectacle to immersion.”

The hotel also features a large wellness facility known as Six Senses Spa London, covering approximately 2,300 square metres. The facility includes a magnesium pool, which is the first of its kind within a London hotel, along with a 20-metre indoor swimming pool, a 325-square-metre fitness centre, yoga and movement studios, and 13 wellness areas with six treatment rooms. Services offered at the spa include cryotherapy, flotation therapy, red-light therapy, a traditional hammam, and a sensory suite.

Additional recovery and performance features include a Biohack Recovery Lounge equipped with technologies such as PEMF therapy, compression systems, vibration platforms, inversion tables, and sound therapy loungers. The hotel also operates a Wellness Centre offering health consultations, biomarker analysis, and lifestyle assessments focused on sleep, metabolism, cognitive function, and stress management.

The property’s wellness offering also includes a partnership with HUM2N, a longevity clinic founded by Dr Mohammed Enayat. Located on the first floor of the hotel, the clinic provides blood diagnostics, IV nutrient therapy, hormone support treatments, and other health-focused protocols. The facility also includes a hyperbaric chamber designed to simulate altitude conditions in a supervised clinical environment.

Food and beverage operations at the hotel follow the Eat With Six Senses principles, which emphasise seasonal sourcing and natural ingredients. The main dining venue, Whiteley’s Kitchen, Bar and Café, offers menus created by Executive Chef Eliano Crespi and Head Chef Jose Jara. The menu focuses on vegetable-forward dishes with techniques such as fermentation and open-fire cooking. A fermentation lab within the kitchen supports the production of preserved ingredients, including fruit ferments and koji, used across the restaurant’s menu.

The bar programme includes cocktails designed for both alcoholic and non-alcoholic consumption. One of the signature drinks, Clouds Over Islay, combines Bruichladdich whisky with amazake and lemon hydrosol created in collaboration with the hotel’s Alchemy Bar. The wine list includes selections from British producers and international independent vineyards, with a focus on seasonal sourcing.

The hotel also introduces the first Six Senses Place, a members-based social and wellness club located above the lobby. The space is designed to host gatherings, talks, and wellness programming organised throughout the year under a schedule known as the Almanac.

Sustainability initiatives form part of the hotel’s operational model. The property includes an Earth Lab, a concept used across Six Senses hotels globally, where workshops and educational sessions focus on recycling, repurposing, and botanical preparation. In London, the hotel will allocate 0.5 percent of total revenue to a Regenerative Impact Fund supporting environmental and community initiatives.

The property operates without single-use plastics and includes sustainability infrastructure such as rainwater harvesting systems, energy-efficient building systems, and over 1,150 square metres of green roof installations designed to support biodiversity and temperature regulation in the urban environment.

The hotel forms part of the broader redevelopment of The Whiteley site, a mixed-use project covering more than one million square feet. The development includes 139 residential units, more than 60,000 square feet of amenities, and 19 commercial brands alongside the hotel. The redevelopment has been managed by Valouran with investment partners MARK and C C Land, and architectural design by Foster + Partners. The project is also part of the wider £3 billion regeneration of the Queensway area in London.

Six Senses London has created more than 300 jobs across hospitality, wellness, and culinary operations. The hotel has also partnered with Lotus to provide transportation services for guests using a custom Lotus Eletre electric vehicle as the hotel’s house car.

The opening represents another step in the global expansion of the Six Senses brand since it was acquired by IHG Hotels & Resorts in 2019. The London property follows recent openings such as Six Senses Rome and Six Senses Kyoto, with additional projects planned in other international markets.
