Restaurant India News: Six Brothers Mahura Becomes First Mahua Spirit in Duty-Free Retail

South Seas Distilleries has introduced Six Brothers Mahura to India’s duty-free travel retail channel, marking the first entry of a Mahua-based spirit into this segment. The move brings a traditional forest-based distilling category into a global retail environment frequented by international travellers.

The product is derived from the Mahua flower of the Madhuca longifolia, an ingredient historically used in tribal regions across India for local spirit production. Its entry into duty-free retail reflects a broader effort to position indigenous ingredients within the premium global spirits market.

Mahua has long held cultural and economic relevance in India’s tribal communities, where it is used in traditional distillation practices. Industry comparisons often position Mahua alongside agave in Mexico’s tequila category, highlighting its potential to anchor a distinct Indian-origin spirits segment internationally.

During the colonial period, regulatory restrictions around forest access and excise policies limited Mahua production, impacting its commercial visibility. Its introduction into travel retail indicates a shift toward formal recognition and commercialization of the category.

The duty-free portfolio includes Six Brothers Mahura along with offerings from the Crazy Cock Indian Single Malt Whisky range. This includes variants such as Rare, Dhua, and the Madhuca heritage edition, which integrates Mahua influence through cask finishing techniques. The Madhuca edition uses mahua-seasoned casks to create a differentiated flavour profile combining single malt whisky with floral characteristics associated with the ingredient.

“The entry of Mahua into duty-free retail is a cultural milestone for India. By bringing this heritage spirit to global travellers, we are showcasing an ingredient that has been cherished by tribal communities for centuries. It is also a proud moment to present Indian craftsmanship through our Six Brothers and Crazy Cock portfolios to audiences from around the world.” said Hamavand Chinoy, Chief Operating Officer, South Seas Distilleries.

Travel retail continues to act as a key channel for premiumisation and category discovery, offering exposure to international consumers. The inclusion of Mahua-based spirits in this channel positions India’s traditional distillation practices alongside globally established categories.

In addition to its cultural positioning, Mahua sourcing is linked to rural economies, with harvesting typically carried out through community-based forest collection. This connects the category to sustainability and local livelihood support, factors that are increasingly relevant in premium spirits positioning.

With global consumers showing interest in origin-led products and new flavour profiles, Mahua-based spirits are being positioned as a differentiated offering within the international premium alcohol market.
