Restaurant India News: Papa Johns Launches Lou AI to Simplify Group Food Ordering

Papa Johns has introduced Lou AI, an artificial intelligence-driven ordering assistant integrated into its mobile application, as part of its ongoing digital transformation strategy. The tool is built to streamline group ordering, reduce decision friction, and improve personalization within the ordering journey.

Lou AI is powered through Google Cloud’s Food Ordering agent and is positioned as the brand’s first AI-enabled platform of this kind. The deployment reflects a broader industry shift toward AI-led customer interfaces aimed at simplifying ordering and increasing conversion efficiency.

Group ordering has traditionally been a pain point in food delivery, often involving multiple preferences and unclear quantity planning. Lou AI addresses this by allowing users to input group size and dietary preferences, after which the system generates a recommended order mix across categories such as pizzas, sides, and add-ons.

The assistant functions as a real-time digital interface within the app, guiding users through decisions without requiring manual browsing or coordination across multiple participants. The objective is to reduce time spent on decision-making while increasing order accuracy and basket size.

“Let’s say you’re hosting your kid’s birthday party – the first order of business is always pizza,” said Kevin Vasconi, Chief Digital and Technology Officer at Papa Johns. “You want everyone to be happy, but how do you land on that perfect order? Lou AI is designed to take away this friction — so families and friends can spend less time deciding and more time enjoying being together.”

The system generates customized recommendations based on user inputs, aiming to balance variety and individual preferences within a single order. This includes accommodating dietary choices and introducing menu combinations that may not typically be selected through standard ordering flows.

“At Papa Johns, we’re using AI and personalization to bring back the feeling of being known – just like how you feel with your favorite bartender or barista,” Vasconi said.

Lou AI, named after the brand’s origins in Louisville, is currently available on both iOS and Android versions of the Papa Johns app. Existing users are required to update the application to access the feature.

With this rollout, Papa Johns is aligning with a growing trend in the global quick-service restaurant sector, where brands are leveraging AI to improve customer experience, drive higher order values, and reduce operational inefficiencies linked to digital ordering.
