Restaurant India News: Karan Johar-Backed Neuma Expands to Kolkata with New JW Marriott Opening

Neuma, the dining brand co-founded by Karan Johar, Bunty Sajdeh, and True Palate Pvt. Ltd., is set to enter Kolkata with a new outlet at JW Marriott Kolkata on JBS Haldane Avenue, Tangra.

The expansion marks Neuma’s latest move beyond Mumbai as premium dining brands continue to target metro markets with experience-led hospitality concepts. The restaurant will operate seven days a week and is expected to have an average spend of Rs 3,000–3,500 for two guests.

Neuma, pronounced “Noo-Maa,” derives its name from the concept of spirit and human connection. Since launching in South Mumbai, the restaurant has positioned itself within the premium dining segment through globally inspired menus, contemporary presentation, and hospitality-driven dining experiences.

The Kolkata outlet will continue the brand’s culinary direction, offering dishes influenced by European and global dining cultures while focusing on ingredient-led menus and modern plating styles.

Karan Johar said, “Neuma has always been about the soul — of a space, of a meal, of the people who gather around a table. Kolkata, with its extraordinary appetite for culture, art, and conversation, felt like the natural next home for Neuma. This city doesn’t just dine; it experiences. And that is exactly what Neuma is built for.”

Neuma is part of a multi-speciality hospitality group operating across more than eight Indian cities, with international expansion also underway in Dubai. The group’s portfolio includes brands such as One8 Commune and Pincode. The Kolkata property has been designed by RENESA Architecture Design Interiors Studio, with interiors focusing on dark-toned hospitality spaces, textured materials, layered seating layouts, and lighting-led ambience design.

Sanchit Arora, Principal Architect at RENESA Architects, described the project as an immersive dining environment designed around spatial rhythm, material layering, and atmosphere rather than visual excess.

Since its launch in Mumbai, Neuma has gained visibility across lifestyle and hospitality publications including Vogue, Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveller, ELLE, Lifestyle Asia, and India Today. The Kolkata launch reflects the continued growth of premium dining formats in India, particularly within luxury hotels and high-spend urban hospitality markets.
