Indian beer brand Medusa Beverages is expanding into New Zealand from August, extending its international operations beyond the GCC region, where it entered earlier this year. The company will initially distribute its portfolio through local partnerships across Auckland, Queensland, Tauranga and Wellington.
Medusa is targeting sales of 10,000 cases during its first year in New Zealand and plans to eventually expand its distribution to 1,000 liquor stores nationwide. Its market-entry strategy will focus on liquor retail, supermarkets, bottle stores and off-licence outlets, followed by expansion into the on-premise hospitality sector.
The company is also targeting one-third of New Zealand's retail beer market by 2029, making the country a significant component of its international expansion plans.
New Zealand's brewing industry contributes NZD 3.58 billion to the country's annual GDP. Premium and high-alcohol beers have recorded a 15 percent increase in popularity, according to industry data cited by the company, even as overall beer consumption shifts towards more selective purchasing.
Medusa will introduce its products through supermarkets and other retail channels before expanding its presence across HORECA outlets. The approach gives the company access to both off-premise consumption through liquor and retail stores and on-premise consumption through hospitality venues.
Amardeep Singh, Executive Director, Medusa Beverages, said, "New Zealand is a natural next step in our international growth journey. It is a market where consumers have a deep appreciation for quality beer and are open to discovering new brands. We are entering with a focused strategy, building through liquor and retail channels first, while establishing a strong distribution network and earning consumer trust. India continues to be our largest market and the foundation of our global ambitions, and every international market we enter is an opportunity to take an Indian beer brand to a wider audience."
The New Zealand launch is part of Medusa's broader international expansion strategy, with the company using distribution partnerships to build its retail and hospitality presence outside India.
