Marking World Food Safety Day, Zepto has unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening food safety practices across its operations and supporting innovation within the wider food ecosystem.
The company has partnered with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to launch a national Startup Challenge centred on food safety innovation. In a parallel move, Zepto has also entered into a partnership with the Food Industry Capacity & Skill Initiative (FICSI) to enhance the capabilities of its internal audit and quality assurance teams.
The Startup Challenge will invite entrepreneurs, startups and innovators to develop technology-driven solutions that can improve food safety across the food value chain. The initiative is intended to provide emerging businesses with an opportunity to present solutions addressing challenges related to food quality, monitoring and regulatory compliance, while contributing to the development of safer food systems.
As part of its collaboration with FICSI, Zepto will roll out a specialised training programme for employees involved in internal audits and quality assurance. The programme is designed to strengthen technical expertise, auditing skills and regulatory awareness among teams responsible for maintaining food safety standards across the company's multi-tier fulfilment network, including Mother Hubs and Delivery Hubs.
Vikas Sharma, Chief Operating Officer, Zepto, said, "Food safety is a shared responsibility that requires collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement. Through Zepto Sankalp, we have been investing in awareness, training, and stronger food safety practices across the ecosystem. Building on this effort, our partnerships with DPIIT and FICSI represent the next step in Zepto's commitment to advancing food safety standards."
Sunil Marwah, Chief Executive Officer, FICSI, added, "Independent assessments and continuous improvement are critical elements of a strong food safety culture. Through this partnership, we look forward to supporting Zepto in strengthening operational practices and driving higher standards of compliance across its network."
The latest initiatives build on Zepto Sankalp, the company's existing food safety programme aimed at strengthening awareness and operational capabilities among food handlers and frontline teams. The programme focuses on embedding food safety practices across sourcing, storage, handling and delivery processes.
The move reflects the increasing emphasis being placed on food safety governance as businesses navigate expanding supply chains and rising consumer expectations around transparency and quality. As quick commerce platforms continue to broaden their role within India's food ecosystem, investments in workforce training, compliance mechanisms and technology-led monitoring are becoming integral to maintaining operational standards.
