Tim Hortons is set to expand and renovate hundreds of restaurants across Canada as franchise owners and the company increase investments in the country’s quick service restaurant sector.
The coffee and restaurant chain said 340 restaurant owners will invest in the construction and renovation of 480 restaurants during 2026. Canadian restaurant owners are contributing $270 million toward the initiative, while Tim Hortons corporate is investing an additional $130 million.
As part of the expansion strategy, 280 franchise owners are renovating 400 existing restaurants, while another 60 owners are developing 80 new outlets across multiple provinces.
The company currently has around 1,500 Canadian restaurant owners operating nearly 4,000 Tim Hortons restaurants nationwide. The investment programme is expected to generate work for local suppliers, contractors, and family-run businesses involved in restaurant construction, renovation, signage, interiors, and equipment installation.
Tim Hortons said renovation and construction materials are being sourced through Canadian-owned businesses, with several components manufactured locally. The company added that custom restaurant furniture is produced in Montréal using 100 percent Canadian-sourced maple, while signage and artwork are also handled by Canadian suppliers and artists.
“Tim Hortons was built in Canada by Canadians, and we are proud to continue investing in Canada to give our guests beautiful, modern restaurants to enjoy,” said Axel Schwan, President of Tim Hortons. “These are Canadian families investing their own money in their own communities – and that's something we're proud of.”
The renovation strategy includes updated restaurant layouts, digital ordering and pickup improvements, upgraded kitchen equipment, refreshed dining spaces, and redesigned baked goods display sections. The company said the changes are intended to improve both customer convenience and operational efficiency for restaurant teams.
Ontario will account for the largest share of the activity, with 214 restaurants planned for construction or renovation, including 26 new outlets and 188 renovated locations. Quebec will see 65 projects, while Alberta is expected to add or renovate 66 restaurants. British Columbia will account for 51 restaurant projects.
The company said the updated restaurant formats will also continue reflecting Tim Hortons’ Canadian heritage and community positioning, including references to its long-standing support initiatives such as Tim Hortons Foundation Camps.
Industry analysts note that restaurant renovation and modernisation activity has accelerated across North America as quick service chains focus on digital ordering, operational efficiency, and customer experience upgrades amid increasing competition in the foodservice sector.
