Indian food safety authorities have issued a warning to a McDonald's outlet in Jaipur after an inspection found cooking oil that was unfit for consumption and rotten tomatoes in storage, said government officials. Regulators have seized food samples for further testing.
Connaught Plaza Restaurants, the franchisee that operates McDonald’s outlets in North and East India, said it is cooperating with authorities and adheres to “rigorous McDonald’s global standards.” Food adulteration cases are frequently reported in India, but safety violations involving major international brands like McDonald’s are considered uncommon.
“During an inspection at the outlet on Monday in Jaipur, a tourist hotspot in the desert state of Rajasthan, inspectors found 40 litres of oil repeatedly used in cooking and unfit of consumption,” said Sushil Chotwani, Government Food Safety Officer.
That breached food safety norms and "officials collected oil samples for further testing," Chotwani said.
Chotwani said McDonald's was issued a warning and given 14 days to fix its practices at the outlet or face further "strict" action. Officials would "inspect more McDonald's outlets in the city.
McDonald’s is among India’s most popular fast-food chains, operating hundreds of outlets across the country and attracting large numbers of customers with its burgers and other menu offerings.
