FU FU, a bold Asian dining concept by BORN Restaurants opens in Chennai. Designed to celebrate Asia’s unapologetically loud, layered and expressive food culture, FU FU arrives as a spirited response to the dilution of regional flavours serving them with intensity, authenticity and attitude.
The name draws from the Chinese character Fu (福), symbolising happiness, prosperity and good fortune often displayed upside down during Lunar New Year to indicate that blessings have arrived. FU FU channels this sentiment with playful irreverence, pairing cultural rootedness with a contemporary edge.
The menu is expansive yet tightly curated, spanning sushi, a cured-and-cut raw bar, salads, okonomiyaki, robata grill, dim sum, bao, stir-fries and sizzling stone bowls. At its core is a commitment to bold expression: raw fish remains pristine and confident, broths are slow-built and deeply layered, and chillies, garlic and smoke are allowed to shine without compromise.
The beverage programme complements the kitchen’s philosophy, reinterpreting Asia’s palate cleansers and drinking rituals with wit. A standout creation, Mouthwash, challenges perception visually unexpected yet distinctly flavour-forward, embodying the restaurant’s mischievous personality.
“Even the drinks at FU FU follow the same thinking as the food. Across Asia, palate cleansers, resets, and small rituals have always been part of the dining experience, and FU FU plays with that idea in a bold, playful way. At the restaurant, the drink ‘Mouthwash’ was created from a joke everyone knows that you can’t kiss after an Asian meal. Served as a tall, sweet blue drink over ice, it cleanses the palate between flavour-packed dishes heavy on onion, ginger, and garlic. It looks unexpected, starts conversations, and does exactly what it’s meant to do. They say you can’t kiss after an Asian meal. Now, you can,’’ said Manoj Padmanaban, Co-founder, BORN / FU FU.
Adding further, Japtej Ahluwalia, Co-founder, BORN / FU FU shared, “FU FU draws strongly from the spirit of the tiger, an energy that represents intensity, confidence, and presence. That intensity, however, is balanced with joy and zest in the process of creating new spaces. FU FU was designed to feel powerful yet welcoming, a place where families can swarm in, make it their go-to destination for big get-togethers, and truly experience that vibrant energy together.”
With 94 seats, including a 12-seater private dining room, FU FU is helmed by restaurateurs Manoj Padmanaban and Japtej Ahluwalia, alongside Chef Gopalsami Mani, who leads the kitchen. As the seventh launch in a year for BORN Restaurants, FU FU stands as the group’s flagship concept ushering in a fearless new chapter in Asian dining for Chennai.
