Nestle and Mars pledge to clean up pet food supply chains

Swiss food giant Nestle SA and U.S. candy and pet food company Mars have made a commitment to take steps to ensure their pet food supply chains are free from human rights abuses and illegally caught seafood.

Nestle and Mars, the makers of Pedigree and Purina pet food have made a statement that they would reduce or eliminate seafood that has been moved by fishing companies from one vessel to another in a practice that enables ships to stay at sea longer.

Nestle has pledged ban on transshipment at sea in its supply chains, while Mars has decided to suspend the use of transshipped products if its seafood suppliers did not tackle problems with the practice.

Transshipment is a process that provides an opportunity for vessels to unload illegally caught seafood into supply chains, and allows ships to conceal abuses against crew members away from port.

Jack Scott, head of sustainability for Nestle Purina PetCare Inc., said, "Over the past several years, Nestle and Greenpeace have worked together to strengthen Nestle's policies governing the procurement and responsible sourcing of seafood."

In a statement, mars said that it recognised the risks of transshipment, and was committed to working with its suppliers to remedy the problems.

Isabelle Aelvoet, global sustainability director of Mars Petcare, said, “But if we cannot resolve these issues to our satisfaction quickly, we will seek to end the use of transshipped products in our supply chains until these serious problems are fixed.”

There has been an increasing pressure on International companies from consumers and governments to be transparent about how and where their products are sourced amid greater awareness of abuses in supply chains.

According to Greenpeace, the move by the world's two largest pet food companies would put "significant" pressure on suppliers to end labor abuses.

Zane's Cafe & Pet Spa Elevates Pet-Friendly Dining Experience in Mumbai

Zane's Cafe & Pet Spa, one of Mumbai's most popular pet-friendly restaurants, has debuted in Mumbai with its improved dining and pet care experience. Originally named after the founder's beloved pet, Zane's has developed into Mumbai's first pet-grooming cafe, providing a comprehensive experience where pet owners can savor fine dining while their four-legged pals receive first-rate grooming services.

With a friendly cafe on the ground floor and a dedicated pet spa on the upper level, the renovated area offers a singular experience where people and pets can be pampered at the same time.

The cafe's expanded menu showcases a thoughtful selection of gourmet dishes and specialty coffee, catering to various tastes throughout the day from all-day breakfast to late dinner. Alongside the human menu, Zane's also offers a dedicated Pets Menu, ensuring furry visitors receive meals crafted with the same attention to quality. What truly sets Zane's apart is its innovative approach to pet care – while dining downstairs, pet parents can watch a live feed of their companions enjoying grooming services upstairs.

The cafe's mission goes beyond providing excellent food and grooming – it aims to foster a community where every sip of coffee and every wag of a tail contributes to an atmosphere of shared joy and companionship in the heart of Mumbai's vibrant urban landscape.

Vishal Bhindora, Director, Zane’s Café said, "We wanted to create a space where pets aren’t just accommodated - they’re celebrated. Zane’s was born from the idea that pet parents shouldn’t have to choose between caring for their pets and enjoying a moment for themselves. Grooming isn’t just a chore; it’s an essential part of their well-being. So while your pet gets the care they deserve, you get to slow down, sip on a coffee (on us!) & a great meal, and watch them being pampered in real-time. A space like this should exist because pets are family, and they deserve a place that treats them like it,”
