Mumbai’s Yazdani Bakery has temporarily closed its Fort outlet for renovation from September 29. The bakery, located on Cawasji Patel Street, has not announced a reopening date.
Yazdani Bakery has been serving customers in Mumbai since 1953 and is known for traditional bakery products including breads, brun maska, mawa cake and biscuits. The Fort outlet has remained associated with the city’s older Irani bakery culture and has served generations of customers.
In its closure announcement, the bakery said the establishment was “built for the people” and that it was now time to give something back to the community. It also thanked customers for making Yazdani part of Mumbai’s story and said it would meet them “on the other side” after the renovation.
The bakery has officially attributed the temporary closure to renovation work. No information has been provided on the scope of the renovation or when operations will resume.
The closure comes amid increased scrutiny of food establishments in Maharashtra, with the state Food and Drug Administration carrying out inspections of restaurants, cafés and other food businesses. The enforcement activity has included notices and licence suspensions over reported hygiene and food-safety concerns.
The development has led to speculation on social media, with some users linking the closure to what has been described online as a “Mundhe Effect”. The speculation has also been discussed in the context of recent action against Mumbai’s historic Kyani & Co, whose FSSAI licence was suspended following an FDA inspection that reportedly identified hygiene issues including rat droppings, flies and cockroaches.
However, there is no evidence that Yazdani Bakery was closed by the FDA. The bakery has itself stated that its temporary shutdown is for renovation. Yazdani’s Fort location and traditional bakery offering have made it a long-running part of Mumbai’s food retail landscape. The bakery has also been operating largely on a takeaway basis after its dining service was suspended following the pandemic. For now, the business remains closed while renovation work is carried out, with the reopening timeline yet to be disclosed.
