The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has notified the Food Safety and Standards (Import) Regulation 2017, making it mandatory for importers to obtain its license.
"FSSAI has set up a new Scientific Panel on 'Food Fortification and Nutrition' to address issues related to fortification of food," the regulator said in a statement.
Highlighting the steps taken to tackle malnutrition in India, Agarwal said the regulator has come out with fortification standards and many firms have shown interest.
Instant noodles can be prepared from wheat flour and/or rice flour and/or flour of any other cereals, millets, legumes and water as the main ingredients, with or without addition of spices.
The three firms Pepsico, Coca Cola and Bisleri hold 60 per cent of the market share in packaged drinking water segment and rest is shared among the smaller brands.
The food safety body is also launching an app tomorrow which will ease them to teach the vendors about the food hygiene and safety and is on mission to ˜Clean Street Food™ in the quest to formalise the unorganised sector.
