Restaurant India News: IPL 2026 Drives 32.31 Percent Growth in Swiggy Food Orders

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 delivered a significant business boost to India's foodservice industry, with restaurants, food delivery operators and dine-in establishments witnessing a sharp increase in consumer demand throughout the tournament, according to data released by Swiggy.

Food delivery orders on the platform increased by 32.31 percent compared to IPL 2025, while Swiggy Dineout bookings recorded a 41 percent year-on-year rise during the tournament. The data highlights the growing role of major sporting events in driving food consumption and restaurant traffic across the country.

The strongest demand was recorded during the playoff stage of the tournament. On May 29, during the second qualifier, food delivery orders peaked at 8:12 pm, crossing 5,200 orders in a single minute. Demand accelerated further during the IPL final on May 31, when food delivery volumes were 30 percent higher than the second qualifier, averaging more than 1,300 orders per minute and reaching a peak of over 6,200 orders at 7:56 pm.

The tournament also generated strong footfalls for restaurants. Swiggy Dineout users saved more than Rs 3.5 crore during the IPL finals weekend on May 29 and May 31, indicating heightened dining activity and increased consumer spending across participating restaurant partners.

Bengaluru, Mumbai and Hyderabad emerged as the highest-performing cities for food delivery orders during the qualifier and final matches. Emerging markets including Surat, Thiruvananthapuram and Vadodara also reported notable growth, reflecting the expanding reach of food delivery and restaurant consumption beyond traditional metropolitan markets.

The dine-out segment witnessed similar momentum. Swiggy Dineout bookings increased 41 percent year-on-year, with Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune recording the highest booking volumes during match hours. Among emerging markets, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Chandigarh and Lucknow reported strong booking activity.

One of the highest restaurant bills recorded through Swiggy Dineout during the tournament came from Bengaluru on May 29, where a group of 20 diners generated a bill of Rs 2,14,061 while watching the match.

The IPL final delivered particularly strong results for Bengaluru's restaurant sector. On May 31, the city recorded the highest number of Swiggy Dineout bookings in India, registering a 32 percent increase compared to May 17. Bengaluru also led the country in premium dining bookings during match hours.

Gujarat witnessed heightened restaurant activity during the final as well, with Ahmedabad recording the highest number of Dineout bookings in the state. Larger group dining occasions were also observed across Surat and Vadodara, highlighting the role of cricket as a key social and dining-out occasion.

The latest data reinforces the growing influence of major sporting events on India's hospitality and restaurant industry. Casual dining and premium restaurant segments, IPL 2026 emerged as a significant consumption driver, generating higher order volumes, increased table bookings and stronger customer engagement throughout the tournament period.
