Restaurant India News: IMWA Introduces Certification Trademark for Indian Single Malt Whiskies

The Indian Malt Whisky Association (IMWA) has introduced a Certification Trademark hologram for Indian single malt whiskies, creating a formal industry-led framework to verify authenticity and production standards within one of the country's fastest-growing premium spirits categories.

The certification mark will be displayed as a secure hologram on qualifying products and will be issued only to manufacturers that meet IMWA's prescribed production requirements. The initiative aims to provide consumers with a clear indicator of authenticity while supporting standardisation across the Indian single malt segment.

Under the certification guidelines, Indian single malt whisky must be produced using 100 percent malted barley without the use of molasses or neutral spirits. The whisky must be distilled at a single distillery in India using copper pot stills and matured for a minimum of three years in oak casks with a capacity not exceeding 700 litres. The entire production process, including mashing, distillation, maturation and bottling, must take place within India. The standards also prohibit the use of external flavouring agents.

The move comes at a time when Indian single malts are witnessing increasing demand both domestically and internationally, prompting the need for clearer industry definitions and quality benchmarks.

Maj Gen (Dr) Rajesh Chopra, AVSM (Retd), Director General, IMWA, said, “As the Indian single malt category scales both domestically and globally, the need for a credible, industry-owned validation mechanism becomes critical. The certification mark is not just about compliance but about establishing a shared baseline of authenticity and process integrity. It aims to bring clarity in a fragmented market, reinforce consumer trust, and ensure that the category’s growth is built on verifiable standards rather than perception alone.”

The certification is expected to provide greater transparency for consumers, retailers, bars, restaurants and distributors by creating a uniform benchmark for identifying genuine Indian single malt whiskies.

The framework is also expected to strengthen India's position in the global premium whisky market by aligning production standards with internationally accepted practices while reflecting India's unique production environment.  With Indian single malts continuing to gain recognition for their quality and craftsmanship, the introduction of the IMWA Certification Trademark represents an important step toward building a more structured and credible ecosystem for the category.
