Scandalous Foods, a B2B player in preservative-free Indian desserts, has released survey insights revealing changing post-meal consumption patterns in India. The data suggests a clear tilt toward traditional Indian sweets becoming routine meal accompaniments—especially after popular dishes like biryani and momos.
The survey found that Ras Malai is the preferred dessert following biryani, accounting for 40 percent of all Indian dessert pairings with the dish. On a broader scale, 2.5 percent of all biryani consumers now end their meals with this sweet dish.
This trend is not limited to biryani. The growing popularity of momos is also influencing dessert preferences. While a large proportion of momo orders include a dessert, the selection varies—featuring Ras Malai, Gulab Jamun, and Brownies as top choices.
Sanket S., Co-Founder of Scandalous Foods said, “Our findings reflect a larger shift in India’s post-meal behavior. Desserts are no longer reserved just for celebrations. They’ve become a natural extension of the dining experience—whether you’re enjoying a hearty biryani or a plate of street-style momos.”
Beyond Ras Malai, biryani orders are also commonly accompanied by desserts like Shahi Tukda, Gulab Jamun, and Halwa—signaling continued demand for classic Indian sweets.
The survey indicates a broader shift in the Indian dining experience, where desserts are increasingly perceived as an everyday part of meals rather than special-occasion treats. This change in dining habits reflects a growing blend of traditional food preferences with evolving consumption behavior.
Scandalous Foods, which supplies preservative-free, single-serve mithais to restaurants and catering services (HoReCa), is leveraging these insights to guide product innovation in areas like packaging, delivery, and dessert pairing formats. As demand rises for convenient yet authentic Indian desserts, the company is adapting to meet changing consumer expectations across the hospitality industry.
