How Restaurant owners are responding to vaccine mandate

Ever since the pandemic has hit the nation, restaurant business was hit the large. From being shut for the longest time to back in operations with several SOPs that were tough to be followed, restaurants faced the brunt at large. Once the restaurants were back in action, it was also mandated that the staffs must be vaccinated before they start to join the work.

Also, if we look at global data, Sixteen percent of operators in the US believe both their sales and traffic will decrease because of vaccine mandates, while 14% believe traffic will increase and 9% believe sales will increase. However, 52% believe guests will be more comfortable because of the directive.

Similarly, in India, restaurants were not sure of the vaccine mandate because when restaurant sector employ more than 70 per cent people who are less than 45 years of age and vaccination for 45 years and below started late. Hence, the sector faced staff shortage on first hand; also many staffs were apprehensive of getting the jab.

“There was definitely a shortage of staff due to the rules. However we believe that the mandate was a good move and fortunately there were enough sources to provide vaccination. This helped all our staff to get vaccinated fast and create a healthy atmosphere within our team in the restaurant. I don’t think currently this is an issue at all,” shared Aji Nair, COO, Mirah Hospityality that operate brands like Hitchki, Khandani Rajdhani and Bayroute to name a few.

Similarly Nikita Poojari of Shiv Sagar that also owns Mahesh Lunch Home appreciated the efforts put in by the government & restaurant association (AHAR), to see to it that all the employees are fully vaccinated.

“Labour’s were initially reluctant to the vaccination process, with a lot of rumours about the side effects. But we are happy to see the restaurant fraternity taking responsibility for their worker’s health,” added Poojari by pointing that with things opening up post covid , they are analysing market trends in various places. Once the travel industry picks up they may consider outlets in Delhi & Hyderabad.

Also, to operate again there were several SOPs those restaurants were following to ensure and gain customer trust because many customers were apprehensive of visiting a restaurant looking at the safety and hygiene. And, vaccination came as a savior as this not only built trust among customers but also ensured security and safety for both owners and staffs.

“The labour shortage is more due to the recent migration of manpower to their hometowns. Most of the workforce in the city is vaccinated, and we have been following strict SOPs for our staff too. All our staff has received both the shots of the vaccine and upon furnishing the certificate only they resume their work,” added Farman Beig, Co-founder & CEO of Wat-a-Burger by pointing it has been a while since the lockdown got lifted. Online delivery partners certainly contributed majorly during the pandemic, however, now the dine -in and take away is also open and footfall has increased considerably.
